Antigoneland - Antigone The Our Manly Interview

Antigone first came to prominence with her ARIA nominated dance hit 'The Bass Has Got Me Movin' by [love] tattoo. A series of global house hits followed with her act Etherfox, leading her to London for 5 years where she finally went solo and recorded her recently released album, the critically acclaimed 'AntigoneLand'. 'AntigoneLand', her top 10 UK Club Chart single 'More Man Than Man', and second single 'Promiscuity' are all available now on iTunes or from http://www.yoctopus.com/

To the ill-informed, Antigone might just seem like another one hit wonder pop princess but this disco diva packs a real punch. Until recently I had only been vaguely familiar with her work. She had a top 10 dance hit in the UK back in 2008 that caught my attention but I had not really heard too much more. But then one of those chance meetings made me sit up & take notice. I heard her singing with La Fiesta Sound system a few weeks back & I was blown away. There is a big difference between someone who can put it all together when they have a studio full of musical wizardry & someone who can engage an audience with raw talent.

I thought I would catch up with Antigone to see what other surprises she had in store.

OM: Is Antigone your real name or is something just for the Stage?

It’s my real name - my father David Foster is a novelist & he has always been into Greek mythology. It does work well as a stage name though.

OM: Are you still based in London or is Sydney home now?

ANT: I have moved back to Sydney for now. A lot of opportunities are presenting themselves so I am more than happy to be calling Australia home. In London I had carved out a very niche following but I think Australia is very hungry for the type of thing I am doing at the moment. I want to bring everything I have learned from my experience in London & apply it to what I am now doing here.

OM: Congratulations on your success with “More Man Than Man”, were you surprised by the single's success?

ANT: Yes I was, but hopefully that’s not the only thing I’ll be recognised for.

OM: I guess that might not work in your favor as it may give people a preconception that you are a dance music diva.

AntigonelandANT: I’ve always been more into disco than house. Its not that I don’t like electronic music but I guess it comes back to the influences of what you grow up with. I have a Jazz background so I see my style as more cabaret than dance but I guess you end up becoming what other people describe you as.

OM:I could definitely see those influences on your new album Antigoneland. Is there a reason why you have released it as download only?

ANT: It’s really more a promotional release than anything else, in the sense that I believe music itself is now the promotion. I will make my money more from licensing than from download sales. I’m just happy for people to be playing & enjoying my music.

OM: What type of gigs will you be playing in Australia?

ANT: At the moment I’m happy to be gigging with my brother & La Fiesta Soundsystem. I feel that I’ve had an amazing journey & have some great stories to tell. I will just see what comes from my release. I don’t want to rush anything; I just want to make sure I keep enjoying myself. I would hate to lose my passion for music & I guess that’s part of the reason I’m back.
