JENNIFER MARSHALL: BEACHCOMBER
Works on paper and paintings, 1981-2011
Jennifer Marshall, one of Australia’s most eminent artists and printmakers, will feature in a survey exhibition of woodcuts, linocuts, etchings, drawings, watercolours, gouaches and paintings exploring seascapes, shipwrecks and lighthouses at the Manly Art Gallery & Museum.
Titled ‘Beachcomber’, the exhibition will be launched on Friday 3 February 2012 by Dr Paul McGillick, distinguished architect, designer and publisher.
The exhibition runs from Friday 3 February to Sunday 11 March 2012.
Jennifer Marshall is preoccupied with the sea and its tempestuous nature, her affinity with the ocean going back to her childhood in Adelaide.
“The sea was just at the end of our street,” she said. “Images of the sea first appear in my paintings and prints from the ‘60s and over the years reappear like a constant refrain.”
With Manly Cove at its door, Manly Art Gallery & Museum is the perfect setting for this extensive exhibition.

Exhibition curator Akky van Ogtrop states:
“When Jennifer asked me to curate this survey exhibition I spent many wonderful hours going through paintings and works on paper spanning thirty years. We decided to focus on Jennifer’s preoccupation with water and the sea, as only fitting for Manly. Beach Comber has it all: the sea, water, storms, shipwrecks, fabulous sea monsters and flotsam on the beach.”
Marshall has exhibited around the world and won many significant awards.
This important survey exhibition connects her directly to the natural beauty of the northern beaches region.
