Manly Art Gallery & Museum presents an exhibition of contemporary printmaking by artists working at one of Australia’s most established print studios, The Warringah Printmakers Studio. The exhibition runs from 20 July – 2 September 2012.

Having last exhibited at Manly Art Gallery & Museum eight years ago with two focus exhibitions exploring scale, Miniare and Big, this new exhibition draws on the breadth and skills of its teaching, professional and emerging artists. The Leave Nothing but Prints exhibition is a culmination of 15 years of safer printmaking.

Safer Printmaking for Artists & Environment

In traditional printmaking, toxic materials such as solvents, etching acids, bitumen grounds and rosin powders are in common use. These materials can leave toxic ‘traces’ in the printmaker and ultimately in the environment. The Warringah Printmakers Studio decided to minimise these effects and in 1997 made a commitment to introduce safer printmaking techniques into the Studio as an alternative way to produce intaglio and relief prints.

Warringah Printmakers Studio's Popular Approach

‘The stance the artists have taken regarding alternative printmaking has proven to be popular, and contributed to the Studio’s success and high profile developed over the last 15 years, both nationally and internationally. We have worked together to make safer printmaking practice an intrinsic part of our approach’, said Sandra Williams from Warringah Printmakers Studio.

Warringah Printmakers have found that it is possible for contemporary artists and printmakers, concerned about their own health and the impact of their art practice on the environment, to ‘take nothing but inspiration and leave nothing but prints’.
