Zoe Elliot entranced and excited a packed house at a new live music venue on Eastern Valley Way in Chatswood on Sydney's North Shore.

Zoe Elliot and the band Mimesis were both runaway successes on a three-band bill at Eastern Lounge recently, proudly flying the flag for Northern Beaches musicians.

The opening act at any music venue is critical… if it’s a dud, the whole night can fall over before it’s begun, no matter the quality of the headliner to follow.

Northern Beaches Singer Zoe Elliot

Manly’s Zoe Elliot was selected to open this month for a reason. The promoters had seen her in action at The Manly Fig and knew that she simply filled a room with warmth. Before she sings a single note, Zoe’s eyes and smile welcome an audience and light the room with what can only be described as a good feeling… and then she sings that note.

From that moment, she has the audience in the palm of her hand. Her music ranges from fun and rhythmic to soulful, reflective and quirky. Whether singing one of the original compositions responsible for winning her numerous song-writing competitions (including the 2010 ASC Song Contest - Adult Contemporary, Grand Winner - and the SongsAlive Showcase 2009)… or covering a well known classic, there are no barriers between audience and artist when Zoe’s on stage. Her rendition of Fly Me to the Moon at Eastern Lounge was simply stunning.

Zoe’s voice has a unique ‘melting’ quality that captivated punters throughout her set, seemingly reaching right into their hearts. She received rousing applause after each song and supplemented her fee for the night by selling many copies of her new album Precipitate at the Merch desk after her set.

And then came Mimesis. These guys were one of the first acts to play Eastern Lounge when it opened back in October last year. There had been calls for their return ever since and this time they were asked to headline the show.

The beautiful Cormack sisters (Jane and Lucy), front man Ben Marshall and second cellist Angus Ryan are all classically trained musicians who have developed a style influenced by everything from jazz and pop to electro and rock. “Cellist” I hear you ask? Yep – two cellos, violin and guitar topped by lead vocals from Ben and up to four-part harmony from song to song… but classical it ain’t.

It’s an instrumental line up you expect to belt out classics… but not classics from Wolfmother and Led Zeppelin! That’s the beauty of these guys… the surprise value.

I would love for Jimmy Page to hear Jane play his lead guitar break from Stairway to Heaven on violin… he’d be blown away… as was the Eastern Lounge audience.

The cheering started in earnest after the first song and continued to swell throughout their set.

First one, then two more, then half the audience (including Zoe Elliot!) felt compelled to take to the dance floor until the entire venue was a heaving mass of happy people moving to the beat.

The band members were having such a great time on stage and that vibe just flowed throughout the room. Mimesis was called back for no less than three encores and would have played all night had not the promoter been forced to call an end to the party, due to the venue’s sound volume policy in consideration of neighbours as the time approaches midnight.

Like The Manly Fig, Eastern Lounge holds monthly shows on the 2nd Friday of every month – (FYI, The Fig opens its doors on the last Friday each month).
