Breast Reduction Surgery Sydney
Breast reduction surgery, or reduction mammaplasty, is all about comfort.
By Sydney Plastic & Cosmetic Surgery Expert Surgeon Dr Sawjin Tew
Very large or heavy breasts can cause neck and back pain. Teenagers with abnormally large breasts, women whose breasts have grown with weight gain, and post-menopausal women whose breasts have sagged may desire breast reduction surgery.
The most common technique is to leave the nipple attached to the underlying breast tissue, remove excess skin, fat and gland, then reposition the nipple higher than its original position. Because the nipple is still attached to the breast, there is no reason why the woman cannot breast feed in the future. For the older woman, who is at the age of screening mammograms, she will be able to have mammograms from about 6 months after breast reduction surgery, once the scars have settled.
The scars resulting from breast reduction surgery are around the nipple/areola complex, which settles naturally as it is at the junction of the dark areola skin and pale breast skin. There is a vertical scar from the nipple/areola complex to the fold under the breast, which is unavoidable. Finally there is a horizontal scar along the fold under the breast, and this can be of variable length, depending on how much skin needs to be removed.
Some patients are interested in liposuction if the breast is to be reduced by a small volume, to avoid the scars. Not everyone is suitable and the patient will need to have realistic expectations.
Generally, breast reduction surgery is a rewarding operation for the patient.
Breast Lift / Mastopexy
Sometimes, moderately sagging breasts can be corrected with breast lift without the need for breast implants. During a breast lift, excess skin is surgically removed to raise the nipple and tighten the breast tissue.
The type of breast lift performed depends on the shape and size of the breasts and the current position of the nipple/ areola.
The aim is to have the nipple areola complex in harmony with the shape of the breast, and in proportion and in balance with the woman’s figure.
