Honesty & Trust in Relationships
Are you lying or have you been lied to?
Advice from Sue Stuart Counsellor/Psychotherapist at Qi Natural Therapies
Trust and Honesty; most people rate these two values as necessary and integral for any successful relationship. Yet in relationship why do we find it so difficult to be honest?
How do the “little white lies” impact on your relationship and once you begin how you do stop them?
Are you consciously aware of how often you deceive yourself and others?
We can be very adept at self deception- telling ourselves that the little white lie or lying by omission was to save the other person’s feelings BUT whose feelings are you saving? Are you sabotaging yourself and your relationships?
And if the truth is exposed do you justify your actions, blame the other person or apologise. If you apologise, are you sorry for what you have done, or because you got caught? How does this affect your partner and what happens to the trust and intimacy within the relationship, initially and over time?
A mature relationship is based on both partners having empathy for the other person. It involves the ability to express desires, thoughts and feelings genuinely and honestly and negotiate any differences in satisfying communications / interactions.
Developing the capacity to tolerate and regulate your own uncomfortable feelings, whilst hearing the “difficult” things is so “freeing” in relationship. In the daily Ups and Downs of life, being able to control your emotional reactivity to an issue, to really understand where your partner is coming from and to be able to honestly express your own opinions rationally, opens up new opportunities for each person and the relationship.
Genuine connections create greater depth, trust and intimacy in any relationship. The secret is not to eliminate the differences, but to embrace and work with them and each other!
