79% Of Managers Believe More Tertiary Qualifications Would Boost Professionalism In The Facilities Management And Property Services Industry in Sydney
When it comes to tertiary level training in the facilities management and property services industry in Sydney, the choice for those already on the job can be limited.
To gain an insight into the needs of the industry, the International College of Management Sydney (ICMS), conducted some research earlier this year.
The resulting report entitled ‘Understanding Staff Training Needs in the Property Industry’, revealed important information that has allowed the College to transform its course offerings.
Surveying key ‘decision-makers’ in the industry (directors, general managers etc), the report found that over half of all respondents believe that there is a lack of good tertiary courses for those who have risen through the ranks in the industry`. 71% believe that their organisation would benefit from having more employees with a tertiary qualification specialising in Property Services or Facilities Management.
Head of Program, Property Services at ICMS, Peter Robinson said that: “Contrary to the popular belief that career development in the property industry is only about practical training, 63% of those we surveyed disagreed with this notion and 79% suggested a bachelor’s degree qualification would give an extra level of credibility and professionalism.”
It was also found that most decision-makers would prefer their staff to learn during work hours, as opposed to after work or over the weekend.
“As a result of these key findings, we have expanded our course offering at ICMS to include short courses in Property Services Management. These courses will be introduced in addition to the available Associate Degree and Bachelor of Business Administration programs and are designed for those already working in facilities management,” said Peter.
The new courses were designed and tailored in accordance with the report findings which advised that employers preferred staff to attend courses that were short and held during work hours. Using these recommendations, ICMS has introduced the following short courses:
• Strategic Facilities Management – this ten week course will provide you with a practical framework for strategic facilities management that you can implement in your workplace. During the course you will be able to work on a real-life case-study from your organisation. You will be encouraged to bring questions and problems from your work place or from a current project into the classroom and will be able to write your own plan in parallel with this course. Participants get a comprehensive set of notes on the topic, examples, and other related resources.
• Foundations in Facilities and Property Management – this ten week course develops a basic understanding of property and facilities management concepts. It covers an introduction to the economic, legal, and technical aspects of property and asset management, lease management and building maintenance. This integrated approach to maintaining, improving and adapting the buildings of an organisation is vital to ensuring that the built environment supports the core function of an organisation.
