Cosmetic surgery covers a wide range of procedures. These may be both surgical and skin rejuvenation techniques.
There are many techniques of skin rejuvenation such as skin care products, microdermabrasion, dermabrasion, IPL (Intense Pulsed Light), Laser and many other modalities. Wrinkle injections and filler injections are also included.
Surgical options include Browlifts (open, endoscopic or key-hole and lateral techniques), Eyelid surgery or Blepharoplasty, Nose surgery or Rhinoplasty, Facelift surgery, Necklift surgery, Ear surgery, Breast surgery including enlargement, reduction, lifts or combinations such as a lift and enlargement, Tummy tucks or Abdominoplasty and Liposuction to name just the most common. These techniques are often combined; Tummy tucks with liposuction, eyelids and browlifts etc. Depending on the complexity of the procedure these may be completed in the rooms, in a day surgery or in a hospital.
Each of these topics are covered in later articles. A description of the techniques, outcomes and after surgery course will be explained. Education is very important to highlight the subtleties of the procedure and likely outcomes.
Cosmetic surgery is considered a branch of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Unfortunately anyone with a basic medical degree can perform surgery and call themselves a cosmetic surgeon. Please investigate your surgeons’ qualifications very carefully. In Australia there is only one authority accredited to train specialist surgeons, these include all the surgical specialties such as cardiac surgeons, orthopaedic surgeons and neurosurgeons. This is the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. Only when surgeons have completed the rigorous selection and examination process can they call themselves Fellows of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and use the letters FRACS after their names. This includes a meticulous ongoing medical education program which is reviewed annually. Only surgeons trained under these guidelines in Plastic, Reconstructive and Cosmetic Surgery can join the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons or ASPS. By checking the ASPS website, www.plasticsurgery.org.au , additional information is available.
