Plastic Surgery Sydney - Microhydrabrasion
As an adjunct to good skin care it is necessary to exfoliate the outer layers of skin. This not only removes dead, dry and flaky skin and skin remnants but also allows easier penetration of subsequent products.
It is an effective skin resurfacing technique.
Home exfoliation kits are lotion based products with abrasive particles suspended in the lotion. Exfoliation is produced by massaging the product into and over the skin and then washing or rinsing away.
Microdermabrasion is a technique that uses a machine to obtain and control the exfoliation. “Micro” refers to the small particles used, “derm” pertains to skin and abrasion is self-explanatory. Microdermabrasion machines project a suspended crystal onto the skin and then apply suction. The crystals may be aluminium oxide, sodium hydroxide or others. The analogy of this is to sand blast the skin.
Recently a crystal free microdermabrasion technique has been introduced. A diamond tip or wand is used to perform the microdermabrasion. These heads are sterilised before future use. Wand heads vary in size which allows for penetration into small or irregular areas (near the nose for example). The coarseness of the diamond head allows variations in abrasion. This is analogous to sand-papering the skin.
Microhydrabrasion combines crystal free technology with the ability to hydrate the skin. A small pipe ducts water or products to the skin surface. Water, enzymes, vitamins or skin care products are applied to the skin simultaneously with the treatment. It can also be combined with traditional crystal-free microdermabrasion to exfoliate, clean and prepare the skin. The subsequent microhydrabrasion further cleans and treats the skin. Fluid resevoirs are often milky showing the extent to which the technique is effective.
Look out for practices that offer this new up-to-date technique.
Treatments usually take between 30 and 60 minutes. It is simple, painless and well tolerated. The top 10-15µ are removed. Because it is a gentle technique it is recommended that the procedure be repeated to obtain optimum results. The advantage is no downtime and a fast recovery. Possible side-effects inclue skin reddening, tingling, slight itchiness or flaking. It is analogous to mild sun or wind burn.
Microhydrabrasion is a very safe procedure.
Pregnant women and teenagers may experience variable results because of the altered levels of hormones. Skin with active acne, infections, inflammations, herpes / cold-sores, rosacea, psoriasis, dermatitis, fragile capillaries, vascular spots or skin cancers should not be treated. Sunbathing, sunbeds, chemical peels and filler injections should be avoided for two weeks prior to the treatment. Waxing, bleaching and hair colourants should be used with caution for a while after microhydrabrasion treatments.
After the procedure, gentle cleansing, toner and moisturises should be used. Sun exposure must be limited. Good quality make-up can be used sparingly.
Red spots, age spots, mild scars, fine lines, fine wrinkles, milia, sun damage and mild pigmentation is usually improved. All skin types can be treated. No anaesthesia is required. The face, neck, hands and decolette area can be treated.
The result is a revitalised, rejuvenated skin with restoration of a healthy natural glow.
