Glimpse Pittwater’s Night-Time Natural World at Free Spotlighting Tours in the Warriewood Wetlands
Pittwater Council’s Coastal Environment Centre is running another series of its popular free spotlighting tours in the Warriewood Wetlands over the summer months.
Spotlighting Tour Schedule
Three spotlighting events have been scheduled for Friday 2 December, Friday 15 February and Friday 15 March in the Warriewood Wetlands.
Each tour starts at 7.30pm and ends at approximately 9.15pm.
What is a Spotlighting Tour?
Spotlighting tours allow people to see nocturnal animals in their native habitat while they play, hunt and feed their young.
Coastal Environment Centre Educator Sonja Elwood said the event was a great opportunity to see local animals that come out at night.
“We’ll be using high frequency recording equipment to locate microbats, a technique known as anabatting,” she said. “The anabat machine detects sound above a human’s normal hearing capacity. The soundwave is recorded by the machine and interpreted to establish the species of bat in the area.”
“We have monitored bats several times before, inviting the community to get involved since 2009.”
Ms Elwood said along with bats, those on the tours may also get to see ringtail and brushtail possums, swamp hens, native ducks, bandicoots, grey-headed flying foxes and frogs.
“The tours are a fun way to learn about Pittwater’s natural world but they also give us important and valuable data in assessing biodiversity in the area,” Ms Elwood added.
