Tummy Tuck Sydney (Abdominoplasty)

Usually a problem for women who have had children, a tummy tuck or abdominoplasty is also a common request for both men and women who have lost weight.

The most common complaint is that the pendulous “tummy”, or abdominal apron hangs over the groin, is heavy to carry around and makes the patient prone to rashes in the groin.

Tummy tuck surgery cannot be done without putting a scar from hip to hip, as the scar is necessary to allow as much of the excess skin as possible to be removed. However, silicone gel sheets can be used to improve the scar. For a “mini” or subumbilical abdominoplasty, the umbilicus is left in its original position and the excess skin in the lower abdomen is excised. For a “radical” or “full” abdominoplasty, the umbilicus is repositioned superiorly, which allows more of the lower abdomen skin to be removed. Moreover, women who have carried large babies or have excess fluid around the foetus often have a gap between their vertical rectus abdominis muscles that needs to be repaired. Occasionally a vertical midline scar is necessary, to remove extra skin in the patient who has lost a lot of weight.

The recovery period for a tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty is about 3 weeks. A support girdle is essential for about 3 to 6 weeks during the healing period to help the skin settle in its new position.
