Yoga and Natural Therapies Boost Natural Defences Against Colds, Sniffles & Winter Blues
Tips For A Sniffle-free Winter
As sure as steamers replace rash-vests and winter follows summer, so to do the inevitable coughs and sniffles fill the air as we ride out the winter blues. But you can safely do loads of things to boost your immune system and general health. Prevention is better than a cure.
The trick is to take some simple steps that generally fall into two parts: modifying or supplementing your diet, and doing activities that boost your immune systems.
Lizzie d’Avigdor, Naturopath at Qi Natural Therapies & Yoga in Manly with over 15 years experience, is passionate about educating people on many easy diet tips to improve your immune systems, and help you stay on top of the flu, coughs and colds. “Even simple changes like drinking ginger tea and eating well can help prevent lurgies, and shorten their duration if they do strike.”
Herbs, Supplements, Vitamins and Minerals
Herbs and supplements, including vitamins and minerals can also be effective in boosting your body’s natural defence mechanisms but should be tailored to the individual’s needs in a professional consultation.
Some argue taking Vitamin C and echinacea during the sniffle months makes you 86% less likely to get a cold, and if you take it at the onset of symptoms, you could cut as much as a day and half off of your cold's duration! *Source: The Manly Daily
Yoga is another traditionally effective way to tone and strengthen your defences. It can boost vitality in the liver, kidneys and other organs and glands that fight infection, as well as helping move lymph around the body, all of which are thought to play a helpful role in beating the Blues. And of course, most people feel energised and relaxed from doing Yoga, which has to help you feel good, whatever the weather!
