Back to the Future! Vintage Torana Restoration with Original 70s Racing Graphics.

Recently we were entrusted with a very rare 1973 GTR-XU1 Torana replica which the owner had spent a lot of time and money restoring to original condition and the last step was to restore the graphics to its original racing livery as driven by Johnson/Forbes at Bathurst.

We started by photographing a small scale model of the car and rendering it in illustrator then scaling it to match accurate measurements we had taken from the actual car. Needless to say all were very careful with tape measure and tools around the black duco!

We studied numerous photos from magazines and archives of the original car decked out with its racing livery and from this were able to recreate them to present in our rendering.

We now had to figure out the best way to produce the graphics.

Interestingly the style of vehicle graphics back in the early 70’s was a lot simpler than the graphics we are capable of producing today so this led us to a decision…..we could digitally print the graphics onto a wrapable vinyl with gloss overlaminate and apply in one layer but this wouldn’t be authentic.

We decided to take the longer route of cutting all the graphics in various colours and layering them on the vehicle which was accurate to the original method.

We actually enjoyed going back to this process as this is where all of us had “cut our teeth” so to speak when we first started working with car stickers and signage.

That afternoon when the client arrived to pick up his collectors item he was blown away by the result! It is incredibly rewarding to go through the journey with a client and keep them informed of all the steps along the way, then see their face at the end bringing something like this back to life.
