Garry Robinson: People get more out of exercise when they do it with others. Team sports have proven that. But, in the past, if you had a gym buddy you’d be restricted to their schedule. What I wanted to do when I started this local group was organize everybody’s friends so that you’d always have somebody to work out with. Everyone shares in achieving your personal training goals and that feels great.

Step into Life Manly uses unique database software to track each member’s progress from the beginning. Your personal trainer makes notes at every workout, recording times, reps, weight, distances, heart rate and enters that information into the database. This way, your personal trainer comes to each session fully prepared, knowing a member’s abilities; age, injuries they might have, how much weight they can lift, how hard they like to train, whether or not they are pregnant. That way a trainer can match the individual to the specific exercise.

Every four weeks we measure fitness, typically through a time trial. Every eight weeks we do a full fitness assessment. After a few of these, members get a report putting side by side all previous efforts in easy to read bar graphs. You can actually see your improvements visually and that is very rewarding.
