Arriving in Sydney and shuttling across to Manly Wharf from Circular Quay, a short taxi ride for $5 delivered me to this small Manly ‘boutique’ hotel. With only 2 days’ notice I was booked into the studio type deluxe ‘Studio Suite’ by the owner of Manly Lodge Miklos. He told me that quaint Manly Hotel had been in his family for 20 years. I was warmed by the European style décor of the room, soft muted furnishing and subtle lighting.

Manly Lodge Manly Beach Accommodation Facilities
The facilities were very pleasing with a spotless bathroom, non-slip floor tiling in the shower and bath area (being a senior this was really appreciated). Also the fully-equipped kitchenette was a surprise with everything one needed to self-cater. The room included a queen bed, sofa and several occasional tables, a DVD/TV, Cable TV, free wireless connection, and closet with iron and board. Also with small balcony was at the back of the room. This is a friendly family type hotel and a welcome change from the larger stainless steel, furniture showroom type hotels with marble bathrooms which lack any ‘soul’.

The Manly Lodge Hotel complimentary breakfast was also a delight, with 5 choices of cereal, low fat culture yogurt, soy, organic milk, and canned peaches and pears, as well as toast with a great variety of jams and savoury spreads not to mention the Fresh Organic Orange juice which is squeezed behind the bar each morning. This self-help meal set one up for the day. I noticed there were many senior citizens. One gentleman, an Inspector from the US Federal Government Aviation Organisation, told me he had travelled the world in hotels and was very impressed with his spotless room and bathroom.

This hotel is only 1 minute from Manly Beach, and a couple of minutes more to the scenic walk to nearby Shelley Bay – a pleasant 20-30 minutes walk. Nearby are Coles Supermarket, many diverse ethnic restaurants, and wonderful shopping on The Corso main street of Manly, as well as at Warringah Mall – a ten minute bus ride from Manly Wharf.
Walking at night down the side to the back of the hotel was reminiscent of living in Singapore with tropical potted plants. There was comfortable seating ‘al fresco’ at the back, a sauna, and coin-operated laundry. Downstairs was a small library of books, and upstairs on the landing maps, tour guides, ferry and bus timetables, phone books etc.
Manly Accommodation -- Green Alternative
The Manly hotel is also really into environmental conservation – with ‘green’ electricity, and a plan to plant a new tree every time you stay for 2 nights. I also appreciated the quiet at night – there were no noises from late-night revellers as we once experienced in Hong Kong, our door knocked in by drunken men! No smoking here!
The popularity of this hotel was undeniable as the reception window had a ‘no vacancy’ notice in the window several days, so book ahead to avoid disappointment.
